The North Eastern Wheatbelt Regional Organisation of Councils (NEWROC) is proud to support a national motion calling for increased federal funding for rural GP services. Backed unanimously at the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly in Canberra, the motion highlights the urgent need to ease the financial burden on rural councils working to attract and retain essential doctors.
NEWROC President Cr Melanie Brown joined the Rural Health Funding Alliance in advocating for fairer Financial Assistance Grants, meeting with key stakeholders to press the case for sustainable GP funding. With some NEWROC councils spending up to 8.3% of their annual rates income to keep GPs in their communities, this funding shortfall is impacting vital local services.
