NEWROC Projects
Driving progress across the North Eastern Wheatbelt
NEWROC is committed to building stronger, more resilient communities – and our regional projects are a key part of that.
From advocacy to infrastructure, health to economic development, these projects reflect the shared priorities of our member councils and the actions we’re taking to support the region’s long-term future.

Financial Assistance Grants for Local Government
Project Status: Advocacy in Progress
NEWROC’s member local governments are contributing over $370,000 annually - plus housing, vehicles and clinics - to attract and retain GPs in their communities. These expenses are drawn directly from limited rates income and are not sustainable.
Despite this, rural communities remain underserved due to workforce shortages, insufficient state and federal incentives, and a lack of targeted support for remote towns.
Volunteer Emergency Ambulance Services
Project Status: Advocacy in Progress
The NEWROC region relies heavily on volunteer-led emergency ambulance services. However, critical issues such as volunteer burnout, underfunding, recruitment barriers, and ageing equipment are placing enormous strain on these essential services.
In 2024, NEWROC commissioned a detailed report to investigate the challenges faced by local sub-centres and provide a basis for stronger advocacy and funding support.
Transition from the Live Sheep by Sea Trade
Project Status: Advocacy in Progress
The live export of sheep by sea is a critical part of the agricultural economy across the NEWROC region, which is home to over 400,000 sheep and 180 sheep-related businesses. In 2023, NEWROC commissioned an independent economic impact report on the proposed phase-out of live sheep exports - a policy that is projected to have significant negative consequences on the region’s economy, jobs and community wellbeing.
Town Teams in the NEWROC Region
Project Status: In progress
Town Teams are community-driven, non-political organisations that collaborate with local governments to bring positive change to main streets, public spaces, and local events. NEWROC is partnering with Town Team Movement to establish and strengthen these groups across its member shires. From beautifying town centres to running community events, each team reflects the unique character and goals of its town.
